Competitor Apple Music paid an average of one cent per stream in 2021, according to the Wall Street Journal. Singer and producer T-Pain shared a chart on Twitter in December that showed artists need 315 streams on Spotify to make $1, though it’s not clear what the source of this information is. That means it would take roughly 250 streams for an artist to earn $1. That’s how much money Spotify paid artists (through their rights holders) per stream in 2021, according to Insider. They are a band doing music for 25+ years and making hits every 2/3 years (ok this is an hyperbole, it depends on the period we are considering, but their hits aren't neck to neck, so they all have their good lifetime), it's being at a famous famous level. As of 2021, Spotify said it had paid $30 billion in royalties to the music industry, and the $7 billion paid out last year was more than double the amount paid out in 2017. It would be like people being surprised at I don't know, Beyoncé being Beyoncé level famous. This is a wall of text I know, it's just that I really don't understand the shock everytime I see it. I am not the biggest fan tbh, I know only some albums, but like. They know how to make noise every couple of years so they always stay relevant and this adds to some classics and also them touring consistently. Also every 2/3 years they add some more modern hits, like A Sky Full of Stars in 2014, Hymn for the Weekend in 2016, Something Kust Like This in 2017, and last year My Universe with BTS. Like it's a band listened by my friends and by my grandparents, they have a good amount of literal pop classics (I genuinely don't know how many people probably had The Scientist, Fix You, Viva la Viva, Paradise and more downloaded way before Spotify was so massive in these latest years, from my European perspective).

I am genuinely surprised because I always see it lol) Can someone explain why people are always so surprised for Coldplay when they appear in lists/ranking? (I hope this doesn't sound like an aggressive tone.
